The word Physics comes from the Greek word phusikḗ "knowledge of nature." One of the oldest practiced sciences, physics helps explain how matter, energy and movement operate. At CW our aim is to introduce this subject in a fun and engaging way to our students!
BALANCE: Student's in Ms. Rosie's K-2 Physics class explored the concept of balance. By creating a project where they get to see, feel, and control the effects of balance they are able to better grasp the idea.
Ms. Rosie used hangars to create the base structure and instructed students to use the appropriate amount of clay on each base and the top to create the balance. Students then discovered that when they carefully constructed their pieces they were able to balance them on just one finger.
HEAT: Ms. Rosie's class then had a chance to explore how density of air molecules becomes lighter when they are activated by heat. She had students create a lovely balloon together that was then heated on the inside by teachers. Unfortunately, it was a windy day in Arcadia, and combined with the weight of the decorations the balloon did not fly off. It did propel itself up while the teachers held onto it.
This project gave the class an opportunity to work together on a project while learning that hot air rises against cooler air. In our classes that incorporate art and science students learn that there isn't a hard distinction between the two subjects and when combined creativity abounds!
