Doll Making!
Creative World Art School
Doll making dates back as early as the 21st century BC. The history of doll making crosses all borders and the functions vary from children's toys to aids for spiritual practices. Whatever their purpose they are artistic creations that have varied in mediums over the years: clay, wood, porcelain, fabric etc.
Students at CW used papier mache and fabric to make their own dolls in Ms. Rosaline's class! Each doll embodies our student's individuality. Mass produced dolls and toys cannot capture exactly what a child wants in a figurine but the students at CW were able to construct dolls with personalities they can identify with.
Recent art exhibitions around the world display dolls to give snapshots of cultural climates and aesthetics. Some examples are the 35th Annual Black Doll Show in LA and the Barbie Exhibit in Paris. Doll making is a personal and culturally important pastime that captures who we are or aim to be in any given period. We hope our students' experiences making dolls was fun and empowering!
